Experience:

Professor R. Setchi leads Mechanics, Materials and Advanced Manufacturing at the School of Engineering of Cardiff University. She received her Double Honours degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (first class, Summa Cum Laude) from Moscow Technological University in Russia, and her PhD from Cardiff University, UK. Professor Setchi joined the School of Engineering as a Lecturer in 2000; she was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in 2007 and Chair in 2011.

Professor Setchi’s main research interests are in sustainable manufacturing, manufacturing and design informatics, systems engineering, design, robotics, AI, HCI, and knowledge engineering. She has international reputation for her research in the area of knowledge engineering and semantic engineering systems.

Professor Setchi has been able to secure, with colleagues, external grant support totaling more than £15 million; £3 million of it is her individual contribution.

Professor Setchi has collaborated with more than 20 UK and 30 overseas universities, over 15 research organisations and 30 industrial companies from more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Australia. She has provided research leadership on over 20 collaborative projects funded by UK and overseas funding bodies. She has contributed over 170 refereed research papers to international journals and 53 conferences in 18 countries including Australia, Chile, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, USA and many European countries. In 2010 she chaired the 14th International conference on Knowledge –based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems (KES 2010) which gathered together more than 300 delegates from 42 countries. In 2014 she chaired the Inaugural International Conference on Sustainable Design and Manufacturing (SDM 2014), which attracted 120 researchers from 21 countries.

Professor Setchi has been a recipient of the 2015 KES Award for outstanding contribution and leadership, 1999 Literati Club Award for Excellence, 2004 Donald Julius Groen Prize of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and awarded the KES Conference Best Paper Award in 2012 and 2013.

Professor Setchi is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered IT Professional, and European Engineer. She is Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the British Computer Society and Senior Member of IEEE. She acts as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Systems Science (IJSS), and the International Journal of Knowledge and Systems Science (IJKSS), and is a Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Knowledge Engineering and Soft Data Paradigms (IJKESDP) and the International Journal of Service and Computing-Oriented Manufacturing (IJSCOM).

Professor Setchi is currently External Examiner at Brunel University and Warwick University.

Professor Setchi has served since 2001 as a proposal evaluator and a project reviewer for the European Commission. She is also a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College and evaluates research proposals for the National Science/Research Funds of the Slovak Republic, Finland, Georgia, Qatar and Portugal. Professor Setchi is also a member of the Cognitive and Learning Disabilities Accessibility Task Force of the W3C Protocols and Formats Working Group (PFWG).
