Biography
Dr Spezi graduated in Physics from the University of Bologna (Italy) discussing a thesis on the dosimetric and physics aspects of therapeutical proton beams, in collaboration with the ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment). He received the Diploma of the School of Specialisation in Medical Physics (University of Bologna, Italy) working on the application of the Monte Carlo method in external radiation therapy.
In 2001 Dr. Spezi was the recipient of the IPEM/AAPM travel award. He received his Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Wales College of Medicine (now Cardiff University) for his work on ‘Monte Carlo simulation of Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy’. The Institute of Physics (UK) ranked his Ph.D. thesis among the best three Ph.D. manuscripts in computational physics of 2003.
Between 2003 and 2007 Dr Spezi held the position of Research and Development (R&D) medical physicist at the University Hospital 'S.Orsola-Malpighi' in Bologna (Italy) where he gained significant experience in clinical radiotherapy physics and made important contributions to the implementation of Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT). He was was also lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bologna.
Current activity
Dr Spezi is currently working in the Department of Medical Physics of Velindre Cancer Centre (Cardiff, UK) were he is responsible for the co-ordination of departmental R&D activities. His current research interests include:
- application and development of Monte Carlo codes for external beam radiotherapy, imaging and dosimetry;
- mathematical modelling of radiotherapy clinical trial outcomes;
- simulation of radiation transport in High Performance Computing and grid environments;
- dosimetry in nuclear medicine and molecular targeted radiotherapy.
Dr. Spezi chaired the Organising Committee of MCTP2009: Second European Workshop in Monte Carlo Treatment Planning.
Peer review activity
Dr Spezi is peer reviewer for the following scientific journals: Radiotherapy and Oncology, Medical Physics, Physics in Medicine and Biology Acta Oncologica and European Journal of Medical Physics. Dr Spezi has been also peer reviewer of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
